Lions Rudo and Kali

Their lives took an unexpected turn when authorities confiscated them.

Male Sandile, a majestic lion, led a pride that included seven females: Sarafina, Khaya, Sihle, Zuri, Kimi, Zendaya, and Dandi. Alongside them were two spirited young males named Rudo and Kali - sons of Sandile himself. Their lives took an unexpected turn when authorities confiscated them from a government-owned game reserve due to illegal breeding practices and non-compliance with keeping conditions.

On the 9th of November 2022, after months of hurdles and paperwork, Rudo, Kali, and their pride found refuge at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. Here, the pride was greeted with ample space for the lions to roam in their species-appropriate enclosures.

In the wild, young lions typically leave their birth pride once they come of age. Rudo and Kali, true to their instincts, began showing signs of independence. Their interactions with Sandile grew strained, hinting at the need for separate enclosures.

Despite the vast enclosure that housed the entire pride, the sanctuary’s animal caretakers made a crucial decision. Rudo and Kali deserved their own space where they could forge their destinies without the shadow of their father.

Before the transition, the lions underwent essential procedures. All the females received contraception implants to manage their reproductive cycles. Microchips were inserted, revealing their unique identities. Blood samples were drawn, assessing their overall health. These measures ensured their well-being.

Rudo and Kali stepped together into their species-appropriate enclosure. The boomer ball (an oversized rubber sphere) awaited them, a symbol of enrichment and play. Together, they chase, roll, and share moments of joy, leaving behind the past and embracing their newfound forever home.
